Poker Do's
Have fun playing, poker is supposed to be fun and it is. Providing you follow these do’s you should find yourself winning much more often than losing and even when you do lose, it won't be so much that it really bothers you.
Try out different types of poker such as cash games, scheduled tournaments and sit n' go's. Each requires slightly different strategy to win and different players are suited to different games. You might be quite a poor cash game player but a great sit n' go player so see which best suits you.
Remember there is a certain amount of luck in poker, even the best players have off days. So don't get down if you've had a bad day or even a bad month, keeping playing well and you will get back to winning ways. Wins and loses in poker should be judged over the long term.
Find the fish. You will always win more money if you play a good basic strategy against bad players than you will trying to play fancy poker against other winning players. Knowing how to leave a poker table when your out matched or at the same skill level as the other players will serve you well.
This list of poker tips do’s and don’t is as important as any strategy guide. There are many good poker players who have a strong understanding of the game but fail to make a profit purely because they don’t know how to follow one or more of these tips. Some may appear a obvious but you’d be amazed how many players make these mistakes. Of course that’s a good thing for you!
Poker Don'ts
Don't play poker at stakes that are too high for your bankroll or too high for you to play correctly. Never play for an amount of money that you cannot comfortably afford to lose. Firstly this will put you under unnecessary stress and cause you to make bad plays because you are afraid of losing. Secondly it will put you at risk of losing your entire bankroll.
Don't try to make fancy plays just for the sake of it. Only bluff if you truly believe your opponent has a weak hand and will fold to your bet. Don’t bluff the fish because they rarely fold. Only slow play a hand if you think your opponent will fold to a decent size bet, if they are a loose player or seem to have a reasonably good hand then bet your hand. If you have a very strong hand you want to build a big pot to win with it.
Don't play poker at your usual stakes if you are drunk or tired. By all means still play to have fun, a drink and a game of poker can be very relaxing. Just keep in mind you probably won't be playing your A game so drop down a level or two in stakes to allow for that.
Don't show your cards at the ends of hands where you don't have to. It may be very tempting to show a great bluff or show a big hand but it all gives information to your opponents and the smarter ones will figure out how to play better against you as a result.
Don't play in a game where you know your out matched. If you are surrounded by players you can tell are as good or better than you then it will be extremely difficult for you to make money long term. Swallow that pride and look for an easier game.
