Pot Limit Omaha (PLO)
In Omaha poker you are dealt 4 hole cards of which you must use any 2 combined with any 3 of the community cards to make your best possible 5 card hand. For a full guide to the rules of PLO see our Omaha Rules Guide. Unlike in Texas Hold’em, in Omaha there is some debate as to what the best four card starting hands are, different poker players prefer different hands. Here however are some examples of the best starting hands in Omaha poker. Here ds stands for double suited which means 2 of the hole cards are one suit and the other two are another, this is ideal in Omaha as it gives you two chances of making a flush.
Best pre flop starting hands: AAJT ds, AAKK ds, AAQQ ds, AAJJ ds, AATT ds, AAQJ ds, AAKQ ds, AAT9 ds, KKQQ ds, QQJJ ds, KKJJ ds, AKQJ ds, QJT9 ds, JT98 ds, T987 ds, 9876 ds,8765 ds, 7654 ds and AT98 ds.
Best post flop 5 card hands: The best poker hands post flop are the same in Omaha as they are in Texas Hold’em, it’s just with 4 cards to choose from you generally have a better chance of making stronger hands.
Royal Flush, Straight Flush, 4 of a Kind (Quads), Full House (Boat), Flush, Straight, 3 of a Kind (Trips or a Set), 2 Pair and 1 Pair.
As a player though the best hands in poker are always the one where you win the most money, as nice as it is to make a Royal Flush it’s usually hard to get paid off when you have as massive hand as there isn’t much your opponents can have to bet with unless you get really lucky. Most of the times when you win big pots are when you have a fairly strong hand and you opponent has a slightly weaker one. Most commonly this is AA v KK pre flop or a set v an over pair on the flop.
